That Saturday was auspicious, and there was a long queue at the temple. Sushma could have bypassed the queue and directly had darshan of the deity, since she was well-known to the priests and temple management due to her generous donations to the temple.

Renu told Sushma that Deepa had just completed graduation.

Sushma asked, “Deepa, what next? Post graduation? Job in IT or work abroad?"

Deepa said," No, aunty.  I don't want to be in a rat-race of jobs, pressures, deadlines and tensions. I think rearing kids and household chores is a full-time job and more demanding than a nine-to-five office job."

Renu said, with an exasperated expression," Sushma ji, look how adamant she is. Nowadays, who will marry an unemployed girl?"

Sushma smiled and said," Why not? There will be thousands who would like to marry Deepa. In fact, I just remembered, we are looking for a suitable girl for my daughter-in-law Anita's cousin, Rahul. I think Deepa will be perfect for him."

While Renu's face glowed like a thousand-watt bulb, Subbu's face was clouded with concern. He sent Deepa to purchase a few vegetables and waited until she left and said," Sushma ji, we are honoured and thrilled for your suggestion. But we are a middle-class family, and you are a very rich, affluent, and high-class family. We can not afford to perform marriage in an extravagant manner befitting your status. Deepa is a small-town girl and may not be comfortable there."

Renu was about to retort sharply, but Sushma raised her hand to stop her and said,'' Subbu ji, I understand your concerns, but I assure you that you will not be burdened either financially or in any manner. We will have no demands. Deepa will be very happy, trust me. In any case, first let us cross the first hurdle. Rahul and Deepa should like each other.  I will bring Rahul and his parents to your house on Saturday evening."

Sushma left without giving Subbu a chance to reply.
